No, Tycho doesn't. Or, at least not unless DJ Coffman (winner of the Platinum Studios Comic Book Challenge (a very dubious "win," that)) puts his hand up Tycho's ass and makes his mouth move.
Over at Comixpedia, in a completely unnecessary (but fun) post in response to Lisa Jonte's "How to Impress an Editor," DJ says:
"'Ever since Tycho brought it up at SDCC, I'm still wondering if GIRL-A-MATIC is a machine that produces girls automatically. And if so, is there a switch or something to calculate the "BITCH" level??
You guys will be RICH if there is!'"
I'll say again I don't think DJ could've dropped Tycho's name with a bigger thud. That was a thud that could've shaken the slab foundation of my house.
When pressed by Joey Manley, DJ admitted that Tycho had said at a CCI panel that GAM sounded like a machine that made girls, and the addition of the bit about "BITCH" was DJ's own.
I met Tycho, nee' Jerry Holkins, at CCI last year, and found him quite nice, and not at all like the sort of guy who'd want so badly to impress his constituency with how harrrrd he is, and how they're all being put down by teh wimmins, that he'd imply that GAM is some sort of bitch machine.
That implication was, in fact, entirely DJ's invention.
What's funny about DJ putting his foot in it here is his art for this month's Comixpedia depicts a guy sleeping in a hammock with a nearby sign that says, "NO DRAMA."
My response to DJ:
DJ's well-thought-out response to me:
"Play dressup." Oh, DJ, that is the saddest li'l insult ever. And if you said, "Jerry Holkins is my best new internet friend," most people would look at you and say, "Who?"
Pay attention DJ, and anyone else who decides to level "bitch" at a woman speaking her mind: it doesn't hurt if she's not afraid of it, and the kind of woman you generally seem to need to throw that insult at is more than capable of handling it. That goes double for "play dressup" and "pretend VERY hard it actually matters."
What I know is if this is how people behave, I'm doing the right thing.
And to think, I almost got through Tuesday without a Stupid Christmas!

"No Drama" Except for DJ

It was set to 15, and recalibrated to 11 after I was produced.
I don't think you could've dropped Tycho's name with a bigger thud, DJ, and speaking of: does he know you drop his name in vain?

Efh off-- I wasn't "dropping his name" -- he said that on a panel discussion in front of a packed room of people. So, instead of stealing the joke, because I thought it was funny, I thought I'd give a tip of the hat to where it came from.
If I really wanted to drop his name, I'd say JERRY HOLKINS IS MY NEW BEST INTERNET FRIEND.
Now, run along and play dressup and pretend to be a REAL editor of any kind, and pretend VERY hard that it actually matters to the world.

Too bad too, must be hard to be taken seriously as a challenge winner when you write like a drunken sailor.
Hey, that reminds me, I have a picture of you, too, Lea, hanging out at Carla Speed McNeil's booth. I really need to do something about those pictures...
Anyway. Plenty of people think that by being caustic they are aping Tycho in just the way that will make them whatever sort of celebrity he is, when I would argue that in fact he is well-loved -- such as he is, I guess -- for being extremely intelligent, rarely if ever off the handle, always well-grounded in facts, and insanely generous (see also: Child's Play.) Would that more people would ape THOSE characteristics in the comic and gaming industries...

Sorry I was abrupt yesterday. But I don't even have one of the EB BEA books, and you got one and did nothing with it yet. USE YOUR POWERS FOR GOOD, RFS!

Honestly, I didn't take it bad, and yeah, it's a shame I haven't read the minibook yet. But truly, I will order the book in my next Amazon run. I just have to space them out so the kids can eat and so on.
There's supposed to be some postcarss with the book. Address them and mail them out, too! Pretty please.
Yes, I totally understand about feeding kids, paying bills, etc. Oh, how I do.

What's your beef with Platinum? That's just crazy talk. You should really MAYBE keep your yapper shut about things you aren't educated about. I mean, pertaining to the win, my idea was solid and beat out more than 10,000 entries from around the world. I'm glad you guys can just discount that-- but i guess i'll let what'll happen in 2007 reply to any un-schooled naysayers in the future. I mean, are you just listening to hearsay or rumors given to you by some blow hard or disgruntled creator who signed a contract where he thought HE was getting something else?
Your responses, as well as the others there, shows just how petty the whole thing is. Get a backbone, or grow a thicker skin.
Looks like I was right about that bitch-o-meter thing. Maybe they should put you back inside the GIRL-A-MATIC and maybe set it to MILD or something, woman.
Last I checked I was though [you should do your research]. So I'll leave the internet walloping to Lea. Cause she's good at that.
This is Stupid Christmas!
Oh, would that people would take their own advice...
Enjoy and learn to laugh a little more, bitches.
AND HE DIDN'T. He said, "I'm still wondering if GIRL-A-MATIC is a machine that produces girls automatically."
What actually got things going down a snarky road, and thanks for that helpful clip, DJ, was Scott Kurtz bagging on GAM, which is earning him a letter from me.
The "Girls, you don't read comics when they're aimed at you, RIGHT? You think things are great the way they are, RIGHT?" Is about what I expect from a webcomics panel with NOT A SINGLE GODDAMN WOMAN ON IT.
*middle finger to San Diego programming*
I'm leaving your comments up, because they're so entertaining (for a while, at least) and an excellent warning to others, but banning you.
You misrepresented what Tycho said, you posted video that PROVES you misrepresented it, and you've called names and changed subjects.
Belligerent I can take. Bitch I can handle, because it's a tiny, tiny toy hammer. What I won't entertain is trolling.
Buh-bye.
Quoting myself, here.
I stand by my middle finger to programming. It has already been documented that CCI programming was weighted towards males.
I still think I'm seeing what I see, namely, Scott Kurtz bags on GAM, Tycho makes jokey, everyone laughs, attitude towards comics aimed at women turns in a not-so-good direction.
However, the clip takes the remarks out of context of the larger panel, and it occurred to me later last night that I had no idea what was said just before or just after. For all I know, Kurtz and company were not at all like this for the entire rest of the panel.
As it turns out, someone who was there confirms that this is so.
Okay!
