San Diego CCI: Oh My Goodness!

make comics
This is awesome!

Out of twenty special guests announced, FIVE are women!

I'm sure the complete lack of women guests in the Update mailer last May, and the subsequent pointing out of same, had nothing to do with this. Absolutely sure.
I am totally impressed. Note the adjectives for emphasis. Now, as the guest list grows to its usual 40-something, to see ten women guests, keeping the ratio at 25%*, would be great.
They could add, say, a woman who's been a webcartoonist since 1995, a pro since 1985, worked in the field in the US and Japan, an activist, a patron of women webcomickers.
I have NO IDEA where such a person could be found, but you can tell Jackie Estrada (chair of the Comic-Con International guest committee) I'll be glad to do it, anyway. As Jackie said in email to me last May 2 "I will be happy to submit for discussion any names that I receive."

*I think the ratio of women to men in comics, lit, and pop media is MUCH higher, but it's a good start.

I wrote to Jackie. she replied to me.

I appreciate your making the suggestion, as I have known Lea for many, many years. At this point, all guest invitations for the 2007 Comic-Con have gone out, and the guest list is nearly complete. I'm sure Lea is delighted to see that CCI has so many female guests already lined up, ranging from writer/artists (Alison Bechdel, Miriam Katin, Renee French) to Golden Age creators (Lily Renee) to fantasy painter (Rowena). We will certainly keep Lea in mind when we start meeting to develop the 2008 guest list--

Best,
Jackie E.

For the record, I said nothing about you being a female creator or the con needing more female creators.

Well, of COURSE I'm delighted, but I'm less than thrilled about the "I'm sure Lea is delighted."

I'm delighted to see my lack of influence in the comics business. <---sarcasm

I just ranted about this on my LJ. Because the response annoyed me.

God, me too. See my post today, though. I'm going to ignore this because it is really maddening and upsetting and it's TOTAL bullshit and I'm tired of it.

As soon as I get a chance to get the drawings from the burnt house and copy them and throw out the crispy originals.
Could be a while. :(

Cool enough, that was the kind of thing I wanted to check on. :)

Meanwhile -- Jackie says I'm not cool and further defends SDCC.

You know? Me and Liz might skip it this year too. Haven't decided yet.

No one ever invites me to cons either. And I have like six (nearly seven) whole months of comics being read by a few people.

Only about as many per month as most DC comics. But I'm just a little webcomicker.
