roaring dragon, spore, monster friday
Just got this off Twitter, via Wintersweet.

Going to San Diego and haven't booked tickets yet? Better make plans to pack light, VERY light, and ship those books.

American and Delta are adding baggage fees for economy passengers on any checked bag after the first, and the fees are for each way. Got two bags? Hi, extra $50. for the trip. Got three to five? $160. each. So, one computer, and a checked bag of clothes, and a 49.99 pound bag of books (bags over 50lbs are charged an extra $80. each way)?
$370. extra. A weekend of hotel room, at some places, a couple nights at others.

http://www.airfarewatchdog.com/AirfareWatchBlog/tabid/54/Default.aspx

"[American Airlines] Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after May 12, 2008 but before June 15, 2008 may check one bag for free and check a second bag for $25 each way. But, if you purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after June 15, 2008 you will be charged $15 each way for the first checked bag and $25 each way for the second checked bag. "

Delta's also going to put the screws to comickers who travel along with their books:
Second bag
$25
(except for first, business, full fare passengers and upper level frequent flyer members)

Excess bags
Travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico
Bags 3, 4, and 5: $80 each
Bags 6, 7, and 8: $110 each (does anyone really fly with 8 bags?)
Bags 9 and 10: $180 each

Overweight bags
Checked baggage weighing over 50 lbs/23 kgs but not more than 70 lbs/32 kgs will be charged at the rate of $80 per piece.
Checked baggage weighing over 70lbs/32 kgs but not more than 100 lbs/45 kgs will be charged at the rate of $150 per piece.

Oversized bags

62–80 inches—total of length plus width plus height: $150 each

My unhelpful and childish reaction?

Of course, this has been my opinion of Delta and AA for a long time. They are fucknuckles, and treacherous, lousy service ones at that.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I avoid those airlines when I can anyway but have sometimes been stuck taking them to GenCon, inevitably with last minute books or catalogs or something stuck in my luggage. Never again. First there's no food and we can't carry our own drinks, and now we have to pay for luggage in addition to the seat (which *may* be "overbooked" once we get there)? Hello completely crippled system.

Baggage Charges? Everywhere
Air Canada, WestJet and Porter have all made similar announcements re: baggage policy in the last few weeks. It's going to be industry-wide, worldwide, apparently.

I try to only fly Southwest. Rates keep going up, and I will not need to go anywhere.

Word. I need to go very little, myself.

I had been flying at least three times a year for twenty years, and don't care if I sound like an old fart: aside from cigarette smoke, flying was FAR better even just ten years ago, and that much better twenty+.

I used to love traveling. Now, I can hardly stand it. Time to start taking the train. Hell, I bet it's getting close to being cheaper to drive.

I love that userpic, it always makes me laugh.

The overweight baggage charges have been in place for some time. I've been told that the rule started getting enforced more strictly in North America over the past few years.

When I came over in '06, I ended up with two max-weight bags and two extras weighing under the no-charge limit. This was still cheaper than shipping the things separately, but not by much.

So glad the wedding airfare was purchased well before 12 May.

Luckily I'm exempt as I already purchased my trip to Puerto Rico for my brother's wedding in August.

However, after I use the Flyer Miles I've earned so far with AA I won't be flying with them anymore. It'll be Continental from then on.

Until they start charging extra too, at which point I'll have to forget about travelling or get shafted.

PS: Lea, please forgive me, but that photo of yours makes me giggle ^_^U

Are we still allowed to carry on a bag and have another bag as a "personal item"? My boyfriend and I just stashed all our books and all the other heavy crap into our carry-on bags and used our "personal items" to carry our clothes, as the personal item is about as big as a laptop bag or a backpack.

This is definitely going to be more of a pain in the ass for flying economy as it'll mean even more people are going to try to sneak ridiculously oversized luggage onto the airplane. Getting on/off will probably be even more of a nightmare *sigh*

I hate Delta--AA's been OK to me previously, but after this I expect everyone to follow suit. Maybe not Southwest, JetBlue, and Virgin America, but everyone else. Sigh.

(And yes, is same me as on Twitter.)

I just want a goddamn train system that works. OTHER industrialized countries have one. Why can't we? Grumble.

(My unhelpful childish reaction is in my icon :P)

AA sux0rz...
Here's my recent tale of woe, coming home from NYC via AA...reposted from my LJ.

The first sign of trouble was the frown on the baggage check clerk's face as I presented my boarding pass, which I had retrieved from the terminals at the entrance of the American Airlines terminal. The clerk, let's call her "Lourdes," sighed. "I'm so sorry, but flight 119 was cancelled. The plane had maintenance issues. We are going to be sending those who were booked on the flight to JFK to pick up a flight there. We will have a van come by to pick you up momentarily, so just sit tight."

Momentarily turned out to be 45 minutes. By the time the first van arrived there were twenty of us waiting for a lift. We sort of negotiated between us that the first 10 people to have arrived there should be on the first van. Since I was acknowledged as the second person there this was good for me, so I handed the driver my two bags: one carry-on, one for checking, and clambered on board.

In a situation where I feel that I have been wronged, usually it's me who is the loudest mouth. It usually works for me, but sometimes, admittedly, I can get myself in trouble instead. However, we had a lawyer, a garment industry CEO and their respective families in the van, and they were on their mobile phones and Blackberries in a full-court press to find out what was going on, and what American Airlines was going to do about it. How could I compete with that, especially with a phone without an unlimited plan? I just sat back and watched a couple of masters in action.

We found out Flight 119 wasn't canceled per se, it was just overbooked. The tale of a 757 that needed maintenance was just that: a fiction. Why was I told that instead of "Oh, the flight was overbooked, and we need volunteers to opt for another less crowded flight"? I probably would have jumped at the chance of a ride to JFK and a chance to see a bit more of New York from a different angle. I probably would have even gone for the hotel room stay, the meal voucher, and the Monday morning flight home, even. But to be told an out-and-out LIE about the reasons why I was being put off the flight was upsetting to say the least.

I'm writing this from the plane. Turned out that Flight 21 was lucky 21...I managed to get through the TSA gauntlet, to the gate and onto the plane in time for flight time.

Never again. Never, never again. AA lost me even before this new scumbaggery.

DAMNIT. American is also one of the only airlines that doesn't serve peanuts in the cabin.

I think I hate everything.

And don't forget -- these bags are still subject to arbitrary inspection and having things stolen from them. Now we get to pay more for that privilege. The train sounds better and better, even from up here in Portland. Hell, Greyhound even sounds better. But most of us fly because we just don't have road trip time.

BTW, I find your response neither childish nor unhelpful. If only everyone will react the same way, this stupid practice will cease.

Ryanair and a bunch of the other "low cost" european airlines have been charging this for quite a bit now. Going to the recent Bristol comics expo my friend brought 50 copies of his 160 page graphic novel on as carry on. I couldn't even lift the bag is was so heavy but he pretended it was super lite while walking onto the plane - did some serious damage to his arm in the process lol

They are NOT the first carriers to do this. They are just the largest so it finally became news. A lot of the carriers charge you $25 if you want to reserve which seat you are in before check-in. Can't wait till the big ones pick that one up.
[info]divalea wrote:

I didn't say they were the first. They are, however, two of the carriers used by people going to SD. (Especially poor souls who start from Atlanta.)
I wish I lived in a Jet Blue to Dan Diego town.

yeah but in the last year, it seems like getting on a Jet Blue plane (which god help me is what we are taking to SD) is a gamble with whether or not you are going to be treated like human cattle..

you can google it. there are other links to it.

they are also being sued for keeping passengers locked on teh plane for up to (I think) 8 hours last year. Several people nearly died from dehydration and quite a few had to be hospitalized.

And now you know why the Czarina and I are driving to Convergence 14 instead of flying. Hell, I'd walk on two broken legs with a chardonnay bottle up my ass before I'd fly American.

I fly about 50,000 miles a year, about half of it on American, and I've grown less and less enamored of traveling. I love it once I'm there, but it's the getting there that's the hurdle.

Last month it took me 29 hours to get from New Hampshire to Oregon. Okay, I wasn't flying American, but them canceling 2,000 flights that week did not help. Also last month, I was assured many times that 40 minutes is plenty of time to catch my connection in Frankfurt. But, guess what? It isn't.

This baggage fee is another straw on the camel's back.

I'm a "once I get there" kind of person, too. I used to love flying. LOVED it. Felt weird if it was summer and I wasn't getting on a plane to somewhere.

29 hours to get across the country is heinous.

Missing a plane in another country sounds nerve-wracking, but maybe not if you're very used to Europe travel?

(I'm so glad you stopped by!)

I go to Europe about twice a year and a bunch of US cons. I usually post travel reports on my Live Journal. Here is the one for my trip to Poland last month. It includes a visit to Auschwitz:

Lately, I've been posting Usagi drawings by other artists such as Sergip, Frank MIller, Jeff Smith, Vatine, etc. Come on over when you have the time.

It's getting to the point where the difference between driving and flying is just time.

Y'know, we're not that far apart geograhically. We could always do something that weekend in Austin.
